Who is Peluk?

Peluk is a boy Erik meets after his disastrous polar bear hunt on the sea ice between Greenland and Hellaland. Peluk was born with a deformed arm and is unable to grow up as a hunter like most young Dorset Culture boys. Being the second son of the Seal Clan leader, he becomes an apprentice shaman, learning the ways of their spirit world along with healing skills. He goes out searching on the sea ice for his brother who feels compelled to hunt further from home than any others. Peluk finds his brother had been killed by a polar bear, injuring the bear in the fight. Peluk tracks the bear and discovers it killed by a strange man (Erik) who is in a small tent suffering from hypothermia after his two companions and three dogs were killed by the bear before Erik arrive at the kill site. Peluk uses his skills to return Erik to health. Erik learns to respect the ways of the native population from Peluk. When disaster befalls the Seal Clan, Peluk is the only survivor. Erik tries his best to help Peluk but his fellow Norsemen have no sympathy for the “Skraeling” and through a misunderstanding, a Norseman kills Peluk. Erik was close by and beat the Norseman to death. For the rest of his life, Erik tries to convince his countrymen that Peluk was not a worthless half-animal creature.
